ABOUT
The purpose of this blog is to profile my progress of a number of book projects; Visual Connections:Ideas and Evidence, as well as several artists book projects.
Visual Connections: Ideas and Evidence
More than twelve years ago, I started a book project called MIX & SHIFT. Initially this book was going to profile not just my artwork but also my work in the community as an educator. After a couple of years of frustration I literally shelved the project. In the fall of 2013 I returned to the idea of publishing a book. The focus of this new book become much clearer. Instead of profiling my work in the arts and education, I want to examine how my creative process weaves in and through my practice as an artist and educator.
At first, I struggled with finding a name for this book. Then it occurred to me that the name of the community arts project I developed and managed, the Visual Connections Project was perfect. While working in the Visual Connections Project I began to see how my practice in the visual arts and my practice in education has fused into a single practice. Since writing this, the title of this book project has changed again, It is now called Visual Connections: Ideas and Evidence. Here is an excerpt from the books introduction.
“Visual Connections: Ideas and Evidence was never meant to be a how to book, about creative process. Instead, Visual Connections: Ideas and Evidence takes the creative process, more specifically my creative process and essentially dissects it. Through this dissection I first want to reveal the ideas and concepts for various photo projects, exhibitions, and learning programs that first emerged on the pages of what I call my idea books, studio journals, studio sketchbooks and even from my old notes. I then want to provide evidence of how these ideas and concepts have been realized in the mounted art exhibitions, various art projects, and learning programs offered to the public. Before I disclose this evidence, however, I first want to emphasize how Integral my idea books; studio journals and studio sketchbooks have been and continue to be, in my practice as both an artist and educator.”
“As you leaf through the pages of this book you will discover that this book very much mirrors my idea books, studio journals and sketchbooks in its design and presentation. You will not find a table of contents, and there are no chapters. In fact the ideas and evidence presented in this book are in no chronological order, but instead the way this book is designed, you will move back in fourth in time as the ideas and concepts jump back and forth between the most recent projects and those of the past.”
ARTIST BOOK PROJECTS
The series of photo and photo – based images found in each of the artist books explores how we are affected by and impact the built environment.
All of the artist books will be available to the public through a distribution in public spaces such as transit buses, cafes, libraries, etc. Using the artist book as a vehicle for exhibiting or presenting photo and photo – based works is not new. The artist book is, however an analogue challenge to the digital dissemination of images. Because of the physicality of the artist book it can be transported, shared, hidden, shredded, lost and found.
